NEW ORLEANS, LA – On Friday, May 11, 2018, more than 57 girls gathered at Rosenwald Rec Center, 1120 S. Broad St., for an evening of high-energy games, group challenges, team building exercises, and personal growth small groups during its annual girls-only lock-in event. In 2015, NORD began hosting girls-only and boys-only lock-in’s where youth are invited to spend the night at a recreation center with a group of their peers. Participants bring sleeping bags and their friends, but no one is permitted to enter or leave the premise without parental consent. The entire event is presided over by the center’s staff of highly trained and capable chaperones.
Adolescent years are harder today than they were in the past; and there are fewer options for youth to participate in safe, meaningful, structured activities. NORD saw an opportunity to fill the gap by introducing its overnight lock-in’s to youth, across the City of New Orleans, two times per year. During the lock-in, participants have a unique, entertaining, and safe, one of a kind experience.
During the girls-only lock-in held on May 11, 2018, participants heard from NOPD Officer, Valerie Keys on the topic of Girl Power. The evening focused on binding relationships, creating new friendships, the importance of positive self-esteem, unity, and teamwork.
The next boy’s only lock-in is scheduled for August 2018 and will serve as a summer culminating event, preparing youth to return back to school for the fall semester.
