Teen Sports Leagues Link to Healthy Behavior
posted Jun 8, 2017
Summer is here, and that means no school and a decrease in positive physical activities for teens. While these months provide critical downtime and rejuvenation, it is important for teens to remain active and stay involved in positive recreation and learning experiences throughout the summer. Teens can become bored easily, causing them to look for unstructured opportunities to interact with peers and participate in outdoor activities. If they can’t find a positive way to socialize and exert energy, they may find it in negative ways. With less structure and adult supervision, the summer is ripe with opportunities for teens to fall into mischief and unhealthy behavior. This means teens need productive activities to occupy a broader range of time in summer than during the school year.
Sports and recreation is one fundamental way to keep teen’s active during the summer months. Despite aging out of many youth sports leagues, there are still opportunities for teens to participate in summer teen leagues. Providing a medium for physical activity, developing friendships, and learning developmental skills across all domains, sports and recreation is a perfect way to engage teens during the summer months. There are multiple health benefits for teens who participate in a vigorous physical activity. Organized teen sports, when focused on fundamentals, facilitate physical activity while providing enjoyment for the teen athlete. Fostering a positive sports experience is a great way to promote and increase healthy behavior for teens.
Fortunately, there are many ways that you can provide positive activities for your teen during the summer. NORD will offer teen basketball and flag football leagues for boys and girls ages 15-18 across the City of New Orleans.
