NORD Hosts its Inaugural City Hall Takeover Event

Members of Teen Council Participate in Pinning Ceremony and Job Shadowing Opportunities at City Hall

On Friday, June 2, the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORD) will host its inaugural City Hall Council Takeover Event. At this day-long event, teens will participate in a pinning ceremony and job shadowing opportunity at City Hall.

The NORD “City Hall” Council initiative is a civic program that offers young people hands-on experience to learn how public policy is shaped on a local level and actively engage with local government. Through the program, teens participate in community mapping exercises, develop and present proposals, and produce service events throughout the city. Before the City Hall Takeover Event, teens attended the Crimestoppers GNO Teen Peace Congress Event at the University of New Orleans. During this event, teens had an opportunity to address community leaders on issues of violent crime and community safety, network with criminal justice agency leaders, and create action plans to promote safety in schools and communities.

During the City Hall Takeover Event, teens will attend a welcome ceremony lead by Mayor Mitch Landrieu and receive certificates and pins for their participation and dedication to enacting change in their communities and city. Immediately after the ceremony, teens will begin a job shadowing opportunity, where they will witness firsthand the work environment, processes and skills in practice, the value of legislation and public service career options. Job shadowing is designed to increase awareness, model youth behavior through positive examples and reinforce the link between local government and community development.

The following public officials will participate in the teen job shadowing opportunity:

  • Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu
  • Ms. Brooke Smith, Chief-of-Staff
  • Mr. Cary M. Grant, Director of Budget and Planning
